About the Background Remover
A background remover uses an AI segmentation model to separate the main subject of a photo from its background and outputs a transparent PNG or WebP. The model runs in your browser, so the photo is never uploaded; very large images are scaled down first.
This tool automatically cuts a subject cleanly out of its background: upload a photo and an AI model identifies the foreground subject and removes everything else, leaving a transparent PNG you can drop onto any background. Doing that used to mean a photo editor and a patient hand with the lasso tool.
It runs an open-source segmentation model entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly — there is no server upload at any point, so a personal or ID photo never leaves your device. The trade-off for that privacy and cost (this is a genuinely capable AI model, running for free) is a short one-time delay the first time you use it: your browser downloads the model (about 44 MB), cached afterward so every subsequent image processes in seconds.
Common uses: an e-commerce product photo that needs a clean white or transparent background, a headshot for a passport or ID photo template, or a subject you want to place onto a different background in a design tool. Works best on photos with a clear subject against a reasonably distinct background — very fine detail like loose hair or fur, or a subject that blends closely into its background in color and tone, is harder for any automatic tool (including this one) to get perfectly clean.

- Is my photo uploaded to a server?
- No — the entire background-removal model runs locally in your browser via WebAssembly. Your photo is never sent anywhere; only the (generic, non-identifying) AI model files are downloaded to your browser.
- Why does the first image take longer than the second?
- The first run downloads the segmentation model to your browser (about 44 MB, cached afterward). Every image after that in the same browser session processes in a few seconds with no further download.
- What format is the output?
- A PNG with a transparent background, so you can place it over any color, image or design directly without further editing.
- Will it work perfectly on every photo?
- It handles clear, well-lit subjects against distinct backgrounds very well. Fine detail like flyaway hair, fur, or a subject with colors very close to its background can come out less clean — as with any automatic segmentation tool, not just this one.
